JAN JĘDRZEJEWICZ AWARD FOR THE BEST BOOK ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Jan Jędrzejewicz (1835–1887) was a Polish doctor and astronomer who lived and worked in Płońsk. He was an internationally recognized scientist and an outstanding popularizer of science. In 1886, he published Kosmografia (Cosmography) – one of the first Polish textbooks on astronomy. To honor and popularize this prominent figure in the history of Polish science, as well as to promote Polish writings on the history of science and technology, the Committee for the History of Science and Technology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Józef Mianowski Fund – A Foundation for the Promotion of Science approached the Mayor and the City Council of Płońsk with a proposal to establish the scientific award named after Jan Jędrzejewicz. This idea was warmly received, and on 24 January 2013, the City Council of Płońsk approved a resolution to establish the annual Jędrzejewicz Award for the author of the best book on the history of science and technology, published in the year preceding the award ceremony. The award of 10,000 PLN has been granted annually since 2013. The laureate is selected by a seven-person Award Committee appointed by the Committee for the History of Science and Technology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Józef Mianowski Fund, and the Mayor of Płońsk. The representatives of the broadly-understood academic community and cultural circles, publishing houses, and authors are encouraged to submit their candidates. The applications (two copies of the book and a recommendation letter) should be sent to the seat of the Józef Mianowski Fund.
